So, you’re ready to dive into the lash industry and that first job. But before you rush into accepting that first offer, let’s take a moment to talk. Just taking any job for having one can lead to feeling stuck and unhappy—and no one wants that! You need to think ahead and know what will work for you. Trust me, it's worth waiting for a position that feels right for both you and the employer.
Ask yourself, What Do I Want? Before you start applying to studios, spend some time figuring out what you're really looking for in a job: Write it down!
Vibe Check: Do you see yourself working in a bump’n studio, luxury salon or something more laid-back and boutique? The atmosphere matters!
Team Energy: Are you someone who thrives in a big team, or would you rather keep it small and chill? Find a team that matches your personality.
Schedule & Balance: Do you need flexibility, or are you good with a set schedule? Make sure hours offered fit your needs and life, not the other way around. Working hours that don’t work for your life or outside responsibilities usually results in you making a quick exit from the position.
Room to Grow: Do they offer training or mentorship? You want a place that helps you level up your skills, not just a spot where you're stuck doing the same thing forever.
What salary do you need? As a new lash artist your pay may not be what you envision. Look for opportunities where increases in pay are available as your skills improve and as your educational level increases. What are the benchmarks you need to meet for pay increases? What is the amount you need to make a position work for you?
Ask Questions Like a Boss The interview isn’t just about you trying to get the job—it’s also about you deciding if you even want the job that’s advertised.
Here are a few must-ask questions:
How’s the Pay? Is it commission, hourly, or a combination of both? Make sure the pay setup works for you. Is there compensation for retail sales? Are there sales expectations?
Client Situation: Will they bring you clients, or do you have to build your own? Be clear on what you’re signing up for.
Growth Opportunities: Is there a future here, or is this just a temporary stop? Make sure you can grow with them. Is there a chance for leadership?
Education Support: Do they care about your education or are they looking for any lash artist that can do the job? Are they willing to help support you in this area with advanced training and certifications?
Don’t Settle for Less It’s easy to jump on the first job offer, especially when you’re excited to get started. But if the job doesn’t feel right, don’t force it. Settling might leave you feeling burned out or frustrated later.
Lastly:
Fit Matters: Just because you get an offer doesn’t mean you should take it. Don’t just jump at the opportunity. Make sure the studio aligns with your goals and values.
Plan: Knowing what you want—and what you don’t—helps you make a smarter choice. Don’t let the excitement of a job offer cloud your judgment. Ask questions. Don’t be swayed by the “pretty” pretty doesn’t always mean a pleasant work environment.
Make It a Win-Win: The best jobs are the ones where both you and your boss are happy. When you take the time to find a good fit, you’ll enjoy your work more, and your employer will value what you bring to the table. Showing up as someone who knows what they want and understands the importance of a great work environment is impressive. You deserve a job that makes you feel good, so don’t settle for less! Trust your intuition.
